The Browsers that be….

Recently, I’ve been spending a lot of time with browsers. Managing Ubuntu-PH and looking for C++ tutorials/solutions. However, Firefox still hangs then crash at the most inappropriate time. I already removed Addons and Themes but it’s still the most unstable browser I’ve ever tried in Gutsy. I’m not really sure what’s up with the Mozilla team, but I sure hope that they find time to fix this before the Final Release.

I tried IceApe (I think it’s only available in the Gutsy repo), but installing addons is a pain in the ass. So I switched back to using SeaMonkey. It’s very stable and I can install addons and themes. Here it is with NewsFox:

And I just love the way Chatzilla, Mail & Newsgroups, and Addressbook are integrated. Frankly, if they just add an RSS Aggregator, I might even ditch Akregator and Firefox. Too bad there’s only a handful of devs working on SeaMonkey and only a few addons and themes available. I can’t even install AdBlock Plus here.

Flock is really nice, lots and lots of features. Features that sometimes gets in the way of your work. Opening a Favorite Feed on My World opens up the Feeds pane. And there’s no way to disable them. Flock is a Full-Featured browser, but it’s features makes it sluggish for everyday use. Hell, I still love Flock… and I’m composing this blog in Flock!

Opera, on the other hand, still have problems with Flash. Er… Flash Player has problems with Qt Browsers and it affected both Opera and Konqueror. Konqueror’s nice, but it’s my backup browser. Opera’s nicer, but closing a tab would direct you to the last tab, instead of the next. And there’s no way to change that. I’ve already configure my Ctrl+W to move to the next tab when I close my current one, but middle-clicking on the tab still directs me to the previous tab…. This one little annoyance is enough for me to ditch it. Well, not completely…. It’s my Chikka portal. And I only launch it when I really need to send an SMS from my desktop.

Epiphany, is lighter.. But I only use it to view Flash videos and Flash Papers. Why? ‘Coz Firefox freezes when I close a tab with Flash video on it. It’s random, but I have to kill Firefox when it does.
